Introduction

The Graduate Institute of Photonics aims at combining theories and engineering training to enhance students’ skills of photonics technology. The institute focuses on application and innovation on R&D and strengthens its academic research. Theories and experimenting are its priorities to increase students’ expertise and competiveness. Students are expected to possess professional ethics, social responsibility, a sense of teamwork and a global perspective. The institute also provides in-service training; thereby contributing to a lifelong learning society.

Optoelectronics is essential to the development of emerging industries in the 21 century. The upgrade and growth of optoelectronics industry grab the attention of the government and the public. To meet the demands of human resources in the country, the development of regional experts of science and technologies and the transition of normal universities, the university established the Graduate Institute of Photonics under the COS in 2002. The development of the institute focused on optoelectronic semiconductors, nanotechnology, flat panel displays and optoelectronic materials. In 2007, the institute started to offer the doctoral program.

There are seven full-time faculty members in the institute. Given that their research fields differ from one another, the institute is committed to integration-based projects in the future. On the other hand, the faculty members of the institute and the Department of Physics with expertise in optoelectronics have together conducted research in groups so as to provide momentum for the research. The faculty members have published a growing number of SCI papers in recent years. Many of these papers are published in Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Applied Physics and other renowned journals of engineering and optoelectronics.
